I love, LOVE my new house. it is cozy but big enough for guests, looks nice when I clean it and has a ton of potential... hmmm potential. Although I love almost everything about it's charm, neutrality and "do nothing to me and I still look great" qualities, it needs more "me" in it. I would say it needs more "us" but Mike has insisted that he could care less about color scheme or wall hangings, so I guess I'm on my own in the style department. I am excited but nervous to make changes because I don't want to mess up an already good thing or cheapen the look of the house. I have put a lot of thought into the things that bother me the most and I really want to work on the boring dining room and the even worse 1/2 bathroom on the main floor. I have a bigger project for our big and VERY empty front room but that will have to wait until we can budget for some furniture ;o)
For now, I am thinking paint and wall hangings- we still have a ton of cute stuff left over from our wedding that we have yet to put up due to severe lack of space. I refused to give it up and trucked it (literally) all the way from Massachusetts knowing that I would have a cute wall to put it up on one day ;o) The walls just need a little warmth and color to break up the (very pretty) but all over color of "toasted almond".
As I am working alone on this endeavor- feedback and suggestions are welcomed... you know when you just need someone else to tell you its right or not quite right? Well I have no one here to help me with that, so girlfriends- help a sister out!! I'll post pics as I go along and I hope to hear back from one or two of you with some stylin' advice!
ok: update... out of these two colors I REALLY thought I wanted the darker (olive green) color... but once they dried, I think it is too dark for these spaces. They tend to be darker parts of the house anyway and I don't want to make them blah... however I am not sold on the lighter... I may head back to the depot to find something in between... stay tuned

Did you see Lisa's dining room makeover? She put bead board up and I LOVE it! I'm actually going to do the same thing in my kitchen. I have a half bath too that is completely empty. Let me know what you decide to do with it, because I'm clueless! As far as paint colors go...I posed the same question on my blog and every suggestion was that I go with a blue/gray or blue/green. I have decided to go blue/gray. Definitely keep us posted on what you decide.
If you're sure you like the darker green you could always just do an accent wall with it -so it wouldn't be too overwhelming or darken the room too much- then have a neutral color for the rest of the walls... Or just add some accent lighting, a lamp or so... also the sheen you pick can make a difference. Flat has a warm and fuzzy feeling but it's not easily cleaned. Eggshell has the feeling of flat but is easier to clean... definately don't do anything over a satin finish in your living areas (so no semi-gloss or gloss)! Just a couple ideas and tips for you.
Fun! I LOVE decorating! It's hard to give advice when we don't know the exact "look" you are going for though. Do you have any pictures of the items you are wanting to incorporate from your wedding? That would help. :D As far as paint colors go, everyone has a hard time finding that elusive perfect color because it is different for everyone! :D One thing that I like to do is go to model homes and look for paint colors that I like! A lot of times the sales rep will have the paint colors on file, just ask. :D Also, I like to go to some of my favorite stores and look at their paint colors on the walls, that way you know for sure you will love it! I just painted my bedroom a gray/blue Restoration Hardware color (silver sage)

The big colors that are in right now are all the cool tones, shades of blues and greys.
The 2 biggest things I would do to avoid "cheapening the look of the house" as you mentioned are decorating with little groupings like stuff they sell at home parties AND painting different colors in all the rooms. :D
To enhance the value and look of the home and avoid being tacky I like adding wainscoting of some sort when painting or adding molding. Putting custom trim around the doors, etc adds an entirely different look to a home....it takes it from a cookie cutter home to a custom home.
For SUPER small spaces, especially powder baths, I LOVE LOVE being bold. Because it's such a small space and easily separated from other rooms of the house, it's finally a chance to break the boundaries, not be conservative, and try something you always wanted to try but were too afraid too...lol. The small space won't be overwhelming with a risky look. I've seen some absolutely jaw dropping gorgeous powder baths that went bold.
